Strictly Equine Optimum is a Vitamin & Mineral complete top dressing supplement to fill in nutritional gaps that can occur due to hard training and competition, growth and reproduction, horses recovering from injury and/ or have limited access and to fresh forage, horses with history of gastric ulcers and senior horses.

Optimum is fortified with B complex vitamins, thiamin (B1), riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3), pantothenic acid (B5), pyridoxine (B6), biotin (B7), blood building nutrients, folate (B9) , cobalamin (B12) and iron, fat soluble vitamins, A,D,E and K, the limiting amino acid Lysine, chelated minerals including the bone building minerals calcium and phosphorous in a balanced ratio of 1.5:1, as well as magnesium, zinc, copper, molybdenum and salt.

Vitamin A can be stored in the horse’s liver for 3-6 months. However, horses that have limited access to fresh forage and/ or consume hay stored more than 6 months can run risk of inadequate Vitamins A and E. Approximately 80% of Vitamin A in the form of Beta Carotene is lost after curing, with an additional 7% loss per month. Vitamin E losses can approach over 60% after 3 months of storage.

Vitamin A is essential for good vision health, epithelial tissue (skin, mucosal and reproductive tract) and keratinization of hair and hooves. Vitamin A is also important for development of strong health bones during the remodeling phase as in growth and post injury when bone cells (osteoclasts) must resorb damaged cells and new bone can be formed.

The National Research Council2007 suggests an adult horse's vitamin A requirement to be:

§ 15,000 IU per day for maintenance horses

§ 22,500 IU per day for moderately active horses

§ 30,000 IU per day for pregnant/lactating mares

The next version of NRC will have enhanced levels of Vitamin A requirements due to several studies supporting improved performances in race horses who consumed 50,000 IU of Vitamin A daily compared to the control group.

Vitamin E works synergistically with Selenium and together they are powerful antioxidants to maintain cellular function and protect against free radical damage. Vitamin E and Selenium also help prevent and improve recovery from tying up.

Vitamin D is required for the absorption of calcium and phosphorous and a lack of Vitamin D, especially with horses confined to stalls and no exposure to sunshine will have reduced bone density and strength.

Vitamin K is required for blood clotting and levels should be maintained especially for race horse who have high risk of EIPH (exercise induced pulmonary hemorrhaging.) Vitamin K is also required for bone mineralization by facilitating the action of osteocalcin a calcium binding protein produced by the bone building cells, osteoblasts. Vitamin K is found in forage and can be synthesized by the hind gut bacteria, however, horses with gastric ulcers and or have been treated with antibiotics can have reduced Vitamin K availability.

The B Vitamins support the enzymes required for the efficient utilization of carbohydrates, fats and protein and are therefore, critical for the energy requirements to sustain growth, maintenance, tissue repair, immunity, central nervous and motor function, respiration and digestion. As with Vitamin K, many B vitamins are synthesized from the good bacteria in the hind gut. However in situations when horses are fed high grain diets, have gastric ulcers, long term use of NSAID, (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), high stress from competition or travel, the hind gut pH can be altered making unfavorable and often eliminating the good microbes, which reduces their ability to produce these vitamins. These conditions can also increase risk of hind gut acidosis, colic and laminitis.

Strictly Equine Optimum is an easy and convenient top dressing to support the additional nutrient requirements for performance and competition horses, special needs as in growth, recovery from injury or illness, breeding mares and senior horses. Complete with all B Vitamins, including blood building nutrients, folate , Vitamin B12 and iron, balanced ratios of Calcium and Phosphorous, fat soluble vitamins, A,D,E and K, electrolytes and limiting amino acid lysine, Strictly Equine Optimum will provide extra assurance to optimize performance and long term good health.
